Garfield, Roosevelt meet in East L.A. Classic

FRIDAY’S TOP HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMES

Los Angeles Garfield (4-4, 4-0) vs. L.A. Roosevelt (5-3, 2-2) at East Los Angeles College, 7:30 p.m. — Going 0-4 in nonleague games might have been the best thing to happen to Garfield, which has opened Eastern League play with four consecutive victories. Led by defensive end Moses Saucedo, whose 15 sacks are among the most in California, the Bulldogs are giving up 10 points per game in league play. Roosevelt is trying to win a second consecutive East L.A. Classic after prevailing, 28-16, last season. The Roughriders’ offense got a boost last week with the return of running back Elgin Rosales and could get another lift if tailback Jesse Lira, who is questionable because of a knee injury, can play against the Bulldogs. The pick: Garfield.

No. 7 Ventura St. Bonaventure (7-1, 6-1) at No. 2 Westlake Village Westlake (8-0, 7-0), 7 p.m. — Westlake can clinch at least a share of the Marmonte League title with a victory over St. Bonaventure, which has been on a roll since an overtime loss against Westlake Village Oaks Christian in September. The Seraphs have won their last six games by an average of 40 points, including three shutouts. Westlake has routed all comers, with a 31-12 triumph over Oaks Christian representing the Warriors’ closest game. The pick: Westlake.

No. 1 Mission Viejo (8-0, 2-0) at No. 15 Rancho Santa Margarita Tesoro (7-1, 2-0), 7 p.m. — This has become the top rivalry in the South Coast League in recent years, with the teams splitting their last two meetings. Tesoro’s only loss was to Chino Hills, 14-13, on Sept. 17. Tre Madden, Mission Viejo’s star quarterback and linebacker, had a 10-yard touchdown run and two sacks last week in his return from a foot injury. The pick: Mission Viejo.

No. 5 Gardena Serra (8-0, 3-0) at No. 21 West Hills Chaminade (8-0, 3-0), 7:30 p.m. — Chaminade has solid victories on its resume, but the Eagles have not experienced anything like the offensive pyrotechnics of Serra. The Cavaliers are averaging 41 points a game, and quarterback Connor Preston has a fleet of receivers at his disposal that would make some colleges envious. Chaminade quarterbacks Logan Scott and Brad Hunt, who have one interception between them, must continue to avoid turnovers. The pick: Serra.

No. 4 Anaheim Servite (8-0, 3-0) vs. No. 16 Santa Margarita (7-1, 3-0) at Saddleback College, 7:30 p.m. — Santa Margarita has lost its last five games against Servite, and playing at home doesn’t usually give the Eagles a boost — they are 1-5-1 against the Friars at Saddleback College. So it might bode well for Santa Margarita that nothing has gone according to script this season. The Eagles have persevered through Coach Harry Welch’s battle with prostate cancer and injuries to quarterback Adam Young to win seven of their first eight games for the first time since 2006. The pick: Servite.

Carson (6-2, 3-0) at San Pedro (6-2, 3-0), 7 p.m. — San Pedro fans could be heard grousing in the stands about their team’s grind-it-out offense last November during a playoff loss to Los Angeles Dorsey. The Pirates’ attack hasn’t changed much this season, with junior quarterback Kenny Potter averaging nine passes in San Pedro’s three Marine League victories. The winner of this game clinches at least a share of the league title. The pick: Carson.
