Basketball: It’s tournament time

A pair of annual high school girls’ basketball tournaments featuring games played over a six-day period get underway Monday at Fountain Valley and Ocean View.

The BK Classic at Fountain Valley features the host Barons and Huntington Beach. In pool play Monday, Fountain Valley faces Lakewood at 4:30 p.m., and Huntington takes on Santa Margarita at 6 p.m. Other pool play games include Cerritos and Beckman playing the opening game at 3 p.m., and Montebello Schurr battling San Juan Hills at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday pool-play games are: Fountain Valley vs. Mater Dei, 3 p.m.; Long Beach St. Anthony vs. Beckman, 4:30 p.m.; Santa Margarita vs. San Juan Hills, 6 p.m.; Huntington Beach vs. Schurr, 7:30 p.m.

The tournament starts at 3 p.m. both Thursday and Friday, and starts at 10 a.m. on its final day Saturday.

Ocean View is the host of the 28-team Hawk Holiday Classic. Games will be played at Ocean View and Garden Grove Pacifica. The Seahawks open at home at 7 p.m. Monday against Trabuco Hills.

The Hawk Holiday Classic continues at 3 p.m. both Thursday and Friday, and at 9 a.m. on its final day Saturday.

Boys’ Basketball

Huntington Beach started its season Monday at the Grizzly Invitational at Godinez High and defeated the host Grizzlies, 57-35. Junior guard Noah Gonzalez led the scoring with 16 points and senior guard Shea Sueda had 11 points for the Oilers.

“This was a good first win for us against a very well-coached team that plays hard,” Huntington Coach Billy Thompson said. “We were able to get the first-game jitters out. I was proud of the way that we played tonight.

In its second tournament game, Huntington put 10 players in the scoring column, four hitting double figures, and ran past Orange, 82-58.

•Also at the tournament Tuesday, Fountain Valley scored a 74-41 victory over Santa Ana. Junior guard Mike Lightbody hit a school-record nine three-pointers and led all scorers with 29 points. Junior guard Matt Serven hit four three-pointers and finished with 20 points, and sophomore forward Josh Gray had 15 points.

The Barons (2-1), who began their season Nov. 24 and routed Westminster, 82-53, successfully bounced back from a 79-44 tournament-opening defeat Monday to Yorba Linda.

The Grizzly Invitational continues through Saturday.

•Marina launched its season at the Coaches for a Cause one-day, eight-game event at Ocean View High, and cruised past Saddleback, 85-39. Senior forward Buzz Stafford had a game-high 20 points with six assists. Senior guards Ethan Young and Braden Meyers both scored 15 points, junior guard Chance Sommerville had nine points, and senior forward Nic Draheim eight points for the Vikings.

“We played with a ton of energy, and all of our guys were excited from opening tip to no time left on the clock,” Marina Coach Nick Racklin said.

The Vikings opened play Monday at the Los Amigos Tournament and rolled by Santa Ana Valley, 90-49. Freshman forward Jakob Alamudun led the way with 25 points and 12 rebounds, Stafford scored 23 points, and Sommerville and Young scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Marina went to 2-0 in the tourney Tuesday by defeating Garden Grove, 47-38. Stafford had 23 points and nine rebounds as the Vikings moved on to Friday’s semifinals.

•Ocean View hosted the Coaches for a Cause event Saturday, and the Seahawks won their opener by overpowering Mission Viejo, 80-40. Senior guard Zamir Kelly scored 16 points (12 coming on four three-point shots) to go with six assists and four steals to pace the Seahawks. Senior forward Christian Anderson had 16 points, four rebounds and five assists, senior forward Andrew Reynolds 13 points, and sophomore center Mehkel Harvey had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

“We came out with a balanced attack and got out to a 28-9 lead in the first quarter,” Ocean View co-head Coach Roger Holmes said. “We shared the ball, ran the floor and rebounded well. Our team defensive effort was outstanding. The team has really worked in trying to become as good defensively as we hope to be offensively and in this game, we were.”

Ocean View also is hosting the Jim Harris Memorial Tournament of Champions this week. In an opener Monday, the Seahawks ran away in the second half and picked up an 87-69 win over Bellflower. Sophomore guard Paul Head had a high of 21 points (five three-point shots) with four assists, Kelly scored 20 points with five rebounds and four assists, Harvey 11 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots, sophomore guard Bryson Betti 10 points, five assists and four rebounds, Reynolds hit three three-point shots for nine points with six rebounds, and Anderson had seven points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

“We, again, came out strong on both ends of the floor going up, 41-30 at half,” Holmes said. “We locked in on the defensive end and held them to seven points in the third quarter. This defensive effort led to great offensive opportunities and we scored 30 points in the third quarter. We had balanced scoring, shared the ball all night, and rebounded strong.”

The Tournament of Champions continues Thursday and runs daily through Saturday.
