Baseball: Fountain Valley takes over first place in Sunset League

The Southern Section Division 1 rankings are about to undergo a major change after Scott Shultz (9-0) threw a two-hit shutout on Friday, helping Fountain Valley defeat Huntington Beach, 6-0, to complete a two-game sweep of the Oilers and send Fountain Valley (15-6, 9-1) into first place in the Sunset League.

Daniel Patzlaff, Dillon Persinger, Willie Aguilar and Junior Aguilar each had two hits. Schultz, who saved Wednesday’s 9-7 victory over No. 1-ranked Huntington Beach, struck out five and walked two.

In the Trinity League, Griffin Canning got the save and JJ Carr had two hits in Santa Margarita’s 2-1 win over Servite. Parker Joe Robinson had a grand slam and five RBis in JSerra’s 8-4 win over St. John Bosco. Brady Shockey added three hits. Orange Lutheran defeated Mater Dei, 4-3, on a game-winning single in the seventh by Leo Hernandez. Garett King threw a complete game for the Lancers.

In the Foothill League, Jack Ralston delivered a bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh to give Hart a 3-2 win over Valencia. Paul Richan threw a complete game. Hart is tied for first place with Saugus, which defeated Canyon, 7-0. Eric Little threw the shutout. Jonah Kapp had three RBIs. West Ranch defeated Golden Valley, 4-3. Jack Spurlin had a home run and RBI double.

In the Sierra League, Ayala won its fourth consecutive game with a 5-1 win over Damien. Erik Cha threw the complete game with 12 strikeouts. Aaron Dominguez threw a six-hitter in Chino Hills’ 4-0 win over Charter Oak. South Hills defeated Claremont, 1-0. Gavin Velasquez threw a three-hitter. South Hills moved into first place.

In the West Valley League, Freshman Tommy Palomera threw a four-hitter in Chatsworth’s 4-0 win over Cleveland.

El Camino Real defeated Birmingham, 5-4, in 13 innings. Erik Whittlesey drove in the winning run and had three hits. Sophomore Jordan Berg threw 8 2/3 innings scoreless relief. Colton Snyder had four hits. Granada Hills defeated Taft, 6-2. Chris Murphy allowed three hits in six innings. Tony LaPorte and Michael Scolaro each had two hits.

In the East Valley League, North Hollywood defeated Arleta, 12-1. Tyson Turner and Michael Rincover each had three hits. Ryan Ruiz had a home run. Verdugo Hills defeated Poly, 1-0.

In the Channel League, Gabe Grandcolas threw a one-hitter in Santa Barbara’s 1-0 victory over Ventura. He struck out six and walked none. Troy Hawkins of Ventura allowed four hits. The only run came home on a squeeze in the fifth.

In the Empire League, Cypress defeated Yorba Linda, 7-4.

In the Valle Vista League, Sergio Flores had three hits in Baldwin Park’s 8-3 win over Covina.

In the Pacific League, Burroughs defeated Burbank, 1-0. Cole Meyer struck out eight.

Beckman defeated Irvine, 5-0. Justin Pearson threw the shutout and Dallas Dey had a home run.

In the Marmonte League, Westlake defeated Moorpark, 3-2, in nine innings on Matthew Donovan’s walk-off double. Luke Dykstra had two hits. Thousand Oaks defeated Newbury Park, 1-0, in 11 innings on Jeff Wislon’s sacrifice fly. Chris Clarke threw eight shutout innings for Newbury Park, striking out seven and walking none. Jackson Simonsgaard threw nine shutout innings for Thousand Oaks, striking out seven and walking none.

In the South Coast League, El Toro defeated Mission Viejo, 2-1. Phil Steering broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the sixth.

Alex Gioronda threw a complete game to help Santa Monica (17-4) knock off Loyola, 4-2.

In the Righetti tournament championship game, Alemany and Lakewood finished as co-champions after the game was called in the fifth inning tied, 1-1, because of rain.

Nick Ortega threw a four-hitter in Chaminade’s 2-1 win over Calabasas. Nick Kahle and Blake Rutherford each had a single and double.

Crespi defeated Templeton, 11-0. Sal Johnson threw a three-hitter. Chris May had three hits and four RBIs. Zachh Mausser added three hits. Charles Steele had two htis and two RBIs. Crespi also defeated San Luis Obispo, 10-0, on a six-inning no-hitter by Nate Buckner. He struck out 10. Steele had two hits and two RBIs.

Agoura defeated Morro Bay, 9-1. Daniel Cipriano had three RBIs.
