Baseball: Chino Hills gets 1-0 win over San Clemente in Division 2 opener

Pitchers Bailey Falter of Chino Hills and Kolby Allard of San Clemente engaged in a duel of pithers on Thursday in a Southern Section Division 2 playoff opener.
Chino Hills finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh of a scoreless game. After a one-out triple by Jake Taylor, Taylor soon scored on a pitch that got away from the catcher, giving Chino Hills a 1-0 victory. Kolby Allard struck out 14 in 6 1/3 innings for San Clemente.
South Hills pulled out a 1-0, eight-inning win over Oxnard. Gavin Velasquez of South Hills outlasted Joseph Romero of Oxnard.
Crescenta Valley defeated Damien, 6-1. Brian Gadsby struck out nine and threw a five-hitter. Adrian Damla had a two-run double.
Kale Morton went three for three at the plate and also threw five shutout innings in Glendora’s 8-0 win over Rio Mesa.
Vista Murrieta got a home run from Coltin Gerhart and three RBIs from J.T. McLellan in an 8-1 win over Bellflower.
In a battle between last year’s Division 2 finalists, Temecula Valley got its revenge with a 4-2 win over Cypress.
Buena defeated Rancho Cucamonga, 2-1. La Mirada, trying to overcome controversy surrounding the suspension of its coach, Kim Brooks, defeated Pasadena, 4-2.
Placentia Valencia upset Beckman, 7-3. Camarillo defeated Ayala, 5-3. No. 1-seeded Great Oak defeated Tustin, 12-3, and will face Paso Robles, a 10-7 win over Yucaipa. Pacifica defeated Dos Pueblos, 9-2.
In Division 6, Windward defeated Carpinteria, 4-1. Malibu defeated California Lutheran, 17-1. Chase Lambert had two bases clearing doubles and finished with four RBIs. Sierra Canyon defeated Rio Hondo, 8-4. Seth Stone got the save, striking out three in two innings of relief.
In Division 4, Oaks Christian got a complete game from Spencer Vogelbach, including seven strikeouts, in a 2-1 win over Katella. California defeated Anaheim, 12-0. Daniel Alvarez threw a two-hitter for five innings with six strikeouts. Ruben Pinedo had two hits and four RBIs.
