Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei defeats Ayala in overtime

Santa Ana Mater Dei was pushed into overtime but finally prevailed over Ayala, 72-68, in the championship game of the North Orange County tournament.

Tournament MVP Spencer Freedman had 22 points. Miles President sent the game into overtime for Ayala with a three at the end of regulation.

Servite took third place with a 57-53 win over Downey. Pearson Parker scored 28 points.

In Hawaii, Fairfax improved to 7-0 with a 47-43 overtime win over Lolani. Babacar Thiombane had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Ethan Anderson added 10 points.

In the championship game of the La Canada tournament, La Canada handed Damien its first defeat, 59-58. Damien tried to come back from a 23-point deficit. Bryce Peters had 24 points for Damien.

In the San Fernando Valley Invitational, St. John Bosco improved to 7-0 with a 66-52 win over Burbank. JJ Watson scored 25 points. Crespi defeated Simi Valley, 70-32. De’Anthony Melton scoed 15 points and had eight assists.

In the Santa Margarita tournament, Kaden Rasheed had 21 points in Santa Margarita’s 72-63 win oer Army Navy. Santa Margarita will play St. Augustine in Monday’s final.

Max Heidegger had 34 points in his first game in the Southland since his sophomore year in leading Oaks Christian past Sylmar, 72-52.

In the La Canada tournament consolation game, Bonita defeated St. Francis, 87-69. Malakhi Jensen had 26 points for St. Francis.

In Las Vegas, Jordan Cohen had 36 points and 10 rebounds in Campbell Hall’s 66-63 win over Arizona Desert Vista. Marco Manlunas had the game-winning shot at the buzzer.

In Hawaii, Sierra Canyon defeated West Virginia Martinsburg, 67-27. Ira Lee and Remy Martin each had 16 points.
