Boys’ basketball: Fairfax, Dorsey, ECR, Westchester advance to Open Division semifinals

Share

The semifinals are set in the City Section Open Division.

Fairfax will play El Camino Real at 8 p.m. and Westchester will take on Dorsey at 6 p.m. next Saturday at Roybal.

The only mild surprise on Saturday night when relying on the seedings was No. 5 El Camino Real beating No. 4 Narbonne, 60-52. It was a game of attrition and conditioning, with both teams getting into foul trouble and looking a little tired at the end, but El Camino Real (20-7) found a way to win.

Marcel Addy had 17 points, Brandon Russell 16 points and Juhwan Harris 12 for the Conquistadores. There were four lead changes in the third quarter, but the Conquistadores got two clutch threes from Russell in the fourth quarter and Harris, a talented 6-foot-2 sophomore, made two important baskets. Josiah Woods, who had four fouls in the first half, made a decisive three in the fourth quarter.

“We defended at the end,” Coach Joe Wyatt said.

Psalm Madukor had 14 points and Jamal Hicks 13 for Narbonne (19-8), which goes to the consolation bracket. El Camino Real lost to Fairfax, 73-56, on Dec. 5.

Fairfax (28-2) defeated Gardena, 65-41. Donald Gipson, Lindsey Drew and Lorne Currie each scored 14 points.

Ellis Salahuddin continued his strong play this month with a 23-point performance and Keith Fisher added 18 in Westchester’s 80-61 win over Crenshaw. Aron Edison led Crenshaw with 24 points.

Dorsey defeated Taft, 80-67. Tommie Groce had 18 points, Cameron Evans 17 and Lafayette Dorsey 14.
