Boys’ basketball: Kendall Small scores 34 points in Mayfair victory

Junior point guard Kendall Small put on a show Saturday night, scoring 34 points to help Mayfair knock off Long Beach Poly, 82-73, in a quarterfinal game of the Division I Southern California Regional playoffs.

Mayfair will play at top-seeded Chino Hills on Tuesday. Corona Centennial defeated Fairfax, 72-63, and will play at Loyola on Tuesday. Deontae North scored 17 points and Sedrick Barefield 14 for the Huskies. Lindsey Drew led Fairfax with 15 points.

In Division IV, Deveral Ramsey made four consecutive free throws in the final 25 seconds to help Sierra Canyon hold off JSerra, 61-56. Jamani Spencer had 15 points and Ramsey 14 for the top-seeded Trailblazers. Gardena Serra defeated Windward, 67-52, and will face league rival Bishop Montgomery in the semifinals. Bishop Montgomery defeated Oaks Christian, 78-59.

Cantwell-Sacred Heart received clutch free throws from Joey Covarrubias to defeat Village Chrisitan, 51-48. Covarrubias finished with 14 points. Balsa Dragovic had 10 points and 16 rebounds. Gligorije Rakocevic had 11 points and EJ Mejia added 10. Cantwell will play Sierra Canyon in the semifinals.

In Division II, San Diego Mater Dei defeated Calabasas, 45-43, after a controversial ending. Austin Smith followed a pinned shot with a tip-in, but the ruling was it happened after the buzzer. Jeremy Lieberman had 11 points and seven assists. St. John Bosco defeaed Sonora, 94-67. Daniel Hamilton and Jesus Zesati each had 23 points.

In Division III, Brea defeated Oak Park, 73-66. Top-seeded Chaminade defeated Santa Barbara, 64-31. Santa Margarita defeated St. Francis, 74-66. Joe Furstinger had 17 points. Santa Margarita will face Cathedral in the semifinals.

In Division V, View Park defeated Santa Clarita Christian, 63-48. Chance Comanche had 22 points.
