Boys’ basketball: Long Beach Poly wins its 20th section title [Video]

Jackrabbits defeat Mission Viejo to take 1AA title

The pressure was on Shelton Diggs, a junior varsity coach at Long Beach Poly who was asked to fill in this season for head coach Sharrief Metoyer, who was forced to serve a one-year suspension after playing an ineligible player during last season’s state playoffs.

Diggs delivered on Saturday, guiding the Jackrabbits to the Southern Section Division 1AA championship with a 54-46 victory over Mission Viejo. It was Poly’s 20th section title in basketball.

“We’re another team in the history book,” he said.

Kameron Murrell made 13 of 13 free throws and finished with 19 points. K.J. Feagin made some key baskets and had 14 points. Chandler Hutchison scored 27 points for Mission Viejo.

“It was a good, typical Poly win,” Diggs said. “We like to keep things close and finish out in the end.”

Poly improved to 26-7.
