Boys’ basketball: M.J. Cage comes through in Mater Dei victory

M.J. Cage is growing up before everybody’s eyes, and Mater Dei is the beneficiary.
The 6-foot-10 junior contributed 17 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks to help the Monarchs defeated No. 1-seeded Bishop Montgomery, 65-59, in a semifinal game of the Open Division Southern California Regionals on Wednesday night at Redondo.
The Monarchs (28-4) will face Fairfax on Saturday night at 8 p.m. at The Pyramid in Long Beach for a trip to Berkeley in the state final.
It was a team effort for the Monarchs, who received 21 points from La’Vette Parker and 14 points from K.J. Smith.
Bishop Montgomery (32-2) received 15 points apiece from Stephen Thompson Jr. and Christian Oshita and 12 points from Ethan Thompson.
