Boys’ basketball: St. Francis moves on after overtime win in playoff opener

A 136-mile trip to Yucca Valley created a big challenge for St. Francis on Wednesday night, and the No. 2-seeded Golden Knights barely survived in a 63-59 overtime victory in a first-round Southern Section Division 3A playoff opener.

Kyle Leufroy scored 27 points for St. Francis, one of four Mission League teams to win playoff openers. No. 1-seeded Santa Barbara defeated Firebaugh, 92-38.

In Division 4AA, Crespi received 22 points from DJ Ursery in a 72-42 win over Fairmont Prep. Derick Newton had 16 points and Alex Copeland 14 in Harvard-Westlake’s 64-48 win over Costa Mesa. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Flintridge Prep, 74-49. Luca Ferrari scored 20 points. In his final prep game, Stanford-bound Robert Cartwright had 19 points for Flintridge Prep.

JSerra defeated Twentynine Palms, 72-40. Oaks Chrisiand efeated Heritage Christian, 90-49. K.J. Smith scored 17 points and Jordan Flannery scored 16 points.

Price defeated Verbum Dei, 79-50. KeSean Davis and James Washington each had 13 points. No. 1-seeded Buckley defeated St. Genevieve, 93-47. Andrew Schianterelli made seven three-pointers and finished with 25 points. Austin Butler had 19. Maranatha defeated San Marino, 64-31. Pacific Hills defeated La Salle, 65-48. Andre Ferguson scored 21 points, Namon Wright 19 and James Casnova 15.

In 4A, Brentwood defeated CAMS, 81-25. Yonathan Napoleon scored 28 points and Tra Holder 16. Viewpoint defeated Desert Christian, 92-63. Christian Juzang had 25 points, Miye Oni 21 and Tim Howell 20. Windward defeated California Military, 100-51. Breland Brandt scored 30 points and Jalen Harris 26.

Village Christian defeated Webb, 81-51. Bear Henderson scored 19 points and Bennie Boatwright had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Campbell Hall defeated Animo Leadership, 76-30.

In 3AA, top-seeded Santa Margarita defeated San Juan Hills, 79-42. Brett Oosdyke made five threes and had 17 points. No. 2 Atasacadero received 23 points from Robbie Berwick in a 66-55 win over Leuzinger. Servite received 17 points from Neil Pau’u in a 43-32 win over Gabrielino. Yorba Linda defeated Beverly Hills, 63-58.

In 5AA, Kevin Doi scored 23 points and had nine assists in Chadwick’s 65-53 win over Vistamar.
