Football: 2016 will be Dave White’s final season as coach at Edison

Dave White, the football coach at Huntington Beach Edison for 30 seasons, announced Monday that next season will be his final as head coach.

White’s son, Garrett, graduates from Edison in June and will be playing football for Yale. He hopes to spend time watching him play. He plans to retire from the district as a teacher in June of 2017.

Athletic Director Rich Boyce said the school will wait until after next season to find a replacement because they hope he’ll change his mind. Either way, White figures to remain involved with the program in some capacity.

White has been considered one of the most respected public-school coaches in Orange County, turning out successful teams while competing against the best.

He was a quarterback at Edison and has coached three of his sons at the school.

Former Servite Coach Troy Thomas used to enjoy the rivalry matchups against White and Edison. Servite defeated Edison in the 2009 Pac-5 Division final.

“I have a lot of respect for what he was able to get players to do,” Thomas said. “Some of the most physical games I’ve coached in were against Dave White teams.”
