Football: Chaminade transfer Brayden Lenius is eligible on Monday [Video]
Monday is freedom day for dozens of high school athletes in Southern California and across the state who have been sitting out the first month of the fall season because of the CIF transfer rule that requires a sitout period. They become eligible immediately.
And no school should benefit more than the West Hills Chaminade football team and quarterback Brad Kaaya, because 6-foot-5, 215-pound senior receiver Brayden Lenius will be available. He’s a top athlete who moved to the area from Canada.
What can he do at the receiver position?
“I can jump, I’m fast and I can catch everything,” he said last week before Chaminade’s game with Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.
He’ll be available just in time for Chaminade’s Mission League opener on Friday against L.A. Cathedral. It means the Eagles can pair him with sophomore Dymond Lee, who picked up a scholarship offer from Miami last week. Lenius is also a very good basketball player.
Lenius has been practicing with the Eagles.
“We don’t need a trick play with him,” Coach Ed Croson said. “We’ll just run him down the sideline and see if they have enough big people to stop him.”
Another player set to make his debut is sophomore Marcus Gandy of Sylmar. He was a standout running back as a freshman at Granada Hills Kennedy.
South Hills picked up a top receiver in Alex Powell, a transfer from Charter Oak.
There are also cross country, girls’ volleyball and boys’ water polo players becoming eligible.
