Football: Corona Centennial offense is in high gear

What can you do for an encore when as a team, you gain 946 yards in total offense and score 86 points?

That’s the challenge for Corona Centennial in Friday’s Inland Division championship game against Vista Murrieta after a record performance in the semifinals in an 86-56 win over Upland.

“It was a crazy night,” running back Tre Watson said. “It was kind of like a basketball score.”

Watson had 519 yards rushing and six touchdowns. He has 3,192 yards rushing and 46 touchdowns this season.

This will be the fourth consecutive final game between Vista Murrieta (12-1) and Centennial (10-2).

“It’s a testament to both programs how hard we’ve worked and how much success we’ve had to play each other for a fourth time,” Centennial Coach Matt Logan said.

“We’ve been looking forward to this since we lost in the final last year,” Vista Murrieta Coach Coley Candaele said.

The game comes down to which defense will be able to force an occasional punt.

“The defense has to make some stops,” Candaele said. “The team that wins this is the defense that shows up and plays.”
