Football: It’s prime rib night at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame

Players enjoy feast

If it’s August and I’m in town, I never miss prime rib night at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, where football players sleeping over in the gym are treated to a prime rib dinner cooked by parents.

“It’s better than Lawry’s,” assistant Coach Jeff Kraemer said.

From Chris Sailer to Justin Fargas to Giancarlo Stanton, I’ve seen Notre Dame players line up and indulge. Friday’s prime rib included a special recipe featuring a horseradish crust from Notre Dame mother Cathie Calloway.

“Oh, wow,” 6-foot-7 tight end-offensive tackle Aaron Haigler said after taking a first bite from his prime rib.

Being a good sportswriter, I made sure to confirm that the prime rib was as good as Haigler claimed.

Players also had a sundae bar of ice cream, M&M’s and Oreo cookies.

It’s their reward for working hard at practice.

If they only knew how delicious the peach cobbler was when Fargas’ mother used to bring it.
