Granada Hills girls’ golf Coach Steve Thompson has run out of room on his fingers for championship rings. The Highlanders have won 10 City golf titles in 14 years. Everyone is back from last year’s championship team.

“This team is the best I’ve ever had. There’s no question,” Thompson said Wednesday afternoon at Encino Golf Course during a match against North Hollywood.

His team’s No. 1 player is sophomore Carol Cheng, who shot a 37 for nine holes in a win over the Huskies.

No. 2 is Jo Jo Roecker. Another important contributor is senior Elena Gil. She’s going for her fourth City title. She gets lots of bragging rights over her father, Danny, who was an All-City baseball player at Sun Valley Poly and went on to USC. He got to play at Dodger Stadium in 1987 but lost to Canoga Park in the City final.

One interesting note on Wednesday was the development of North Hollywood freshman Jasmine Lew, who could be a contender to win the City individual title. She had the low score of 35. Her drives were consistently 240 yards and beyond.
