Southern Section commissioner addresses decline of multi-sport athletes

In a commissioner’s message, Rob Wigod of the Southern Section voiced concern at the decline of multi-sport athletes and the increase of students transferring to multiple schools.

“As the commissioner of athletics for the CIF Southern Seciton, it has always been my primary goal to move our section forward and that will continue to motivate me each and every day,” he writes. “However, if making progress means that we continue to see the decline of multi-sport athletes in favor of multi-school athletes, then I see that as a step backward for all of us.”

Wigod advises, “Perhaps the student-athlete who participates in more than one sport at their high school would have a stronger connection to that high school and would be less likely to leave in search of a different sports experience somewhere else.”

It’s good that Wigod is addressing the issue of students moving from school to school and the decline in multi-sport athletes.

Both are affecting high school sports in big ways. It’s also up to coaches and administrators to help create an environment for multi-sport athletes to thrive.
