Prep Basketball GIRLS : Burroughs Loses to New-Look Crescenta Valley

After finishing 1-19 last season, Crescenta Valley improved its record Wednesday afternoon to 6-1 with a big, non-league 70-51 win over Burroughs, which fell to 7-2.

First-year coach Bill Richards has turned the basketball program around with the help of 6-1 sophomore center, Molly Wampler. An All-Southern Section freshman last season, she scored 26 points and had 14 rebounds for the Falcons.

Reseda 54, San Fernando 30 Guard Nicky Adams scored 20 points to lift Reseda (5-2) to a 54-30 rout of San Fernando in a Valley 3-A League opener at Reseda.

Adams had six points and several steals as the Regents (5-2) outscored San Fernando, 15-2, in the first quarter.

Guard/forward Dana Jones added 12 points for Reseda, which improved its overall record to 5-2. North Hollywood 53, Sylmar 49 North Hollywood High remained unbeaten but it took a furious fourth quarter rally to beat Sylmar in the opening Valley 3-A game for both teams.

North Hollywood, 6-0, trailed 37-30 entering the final period.

Cleveland 67, Taft 29 Cleveland jumped out to a 34-11 halftime lead and rolled to a 67-29 girls’ basketball victory over Taft Wednesday in a Valley 4-A League opener at Taft.

Senior guards Jolanda Lanns and Kim Green combined for 37 points to lead the rout while forward Alissa Morton had 21 of the 29 points and nine rebounds for Taft.

Van Nuys 62, Monroe 28 Monroe High had its first girls basketball game ever but it wound up losing to Van Nuys in a Valley 3-A game.

Juniors Brigitt Motes and Bernadette Tillis led the Wolves (3-2) with 16 and 15 points respectively.

Birmingham 55, Polytechnic 20 Jennie Washington and Shaggaro Lattin each scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lift Birmingham High over Polytechnic High, 55-20, in a Girls Valley League opener.

The Parrots scored the first two points of the game at Birmingham, but the Braves, who dominated the boards, scored the next 12 points and never looked back.

Canoga Park 43, Palisades 31 Defending Valley 3-A champion Canoga Park ran off to an 8-2 first quarter lead and held on for the victory in the first league game of the season for both teams.

Lori Clemons had 14 points for the winners.

Hart 56, Saugus 35 Kim Flowers, Jill Daniels and Monica Burk combined for 54 points of the 56 points for Hart in the non-league rout. Daniels scored 19 while Burke and Flowers had 18 and 17 respectively.

Patty Miller had 14 for Saugus, now 2-8 for the season.

Thousand Oaks 57, Camarillo 19 Micki Hamilton had 14 points and 13 rebounds and Kippe Brown had 14 points as Thousand Oaks upped its record to 9-2 and 1-0 in the MarmonteLeague opener. Tonia Dupont had 10 of Camarillo’s 19 points.

Windward 32, Campbell Hall 31 Tracey Murray had 19 points for the losers, now 1-4. Campbell Hall meets Faith Baptist in its next scheduled contest.
