Girls Roundup : Gainey Leads Mater Dei to Victory

Senior guard Mary Gainey scored 19 points and Mater Dei High School held off a late Edison rally as the Monarchs beat the Chagers, 48-42, in a nonleague girls’ basketball game Saturday night at Huntington Beach.

No. 5 Mater Dei took a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter, but saw Edison cut the advantage to four points with less than two minutes to play. Sophomore guard Denise Ogburn led the Chargers with 14 points. Michelle Hennessey, another sophomore guard, added 8 points and 8 assists.

It was the second time this season the Chargers had a close game against Mater Dei. Edison, with three sophomores and two juniors in its starting lineup and no seniors on its roster, lost a 62-60 decision earlier in the season.

In other nonleague action:

Valencia 46, El Dorado 42--The Tigers got balanced scoring from their front line players to score a come-from-behind at Valencia. Forward Stacey Blank led the Tigers with 12 points. Forward Angela Granger and center Heather Sandoval each added 11 points.

El Dorado led, 34-30, after the third quarter but the Tigers outscored the Golden Hawks 16-8, in the final period.

El Dorado’s Jill Matyuch led all scorers with 18 points. The Golden Hawks are 5-6 overall. Valencia is 4-7.

In Century League action:

Foothill 48, Orange 36--Jennifer Osur scored 19 points but her twin sister, Jill, was limited to only 5 as the Knights rolled to their third consecutive Century League win. Foothill outscored the Panthers, 19-9, in the third quarter to seal the win.
