Garden Grove League : Zugates Leads La Quinta, 67-51

Mike Zugates had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead La Quinta High School to a 67-51 win over Los Amigos in a Garden Grove League opener Wednesday night at Los Amigos.

Nathan Barker contributed 12 points and 6 rebounds for the Aztecs. Geno Howard led Los Amigos with 14 points. La Quinta Coach Jim Perry said he was particularly pleased with the play of freshman Arie Buford, who came off the bench to score four points.

“He played with a lot of poise,” Perry said. LA QUINTA (67)--Zugates 25, Lee 12, Barker 12, St. John 4, Schneggenburger 3, Molin 4, Buford 4, Recktenwald 3.

LOS AMIGOS (51)--Howard 14, McMullen 2, Davis 3, Cortez 9, Hyatt 8, Anderson 7, Thompson 6, Grandison 2.

In other Garden Grove League action:

Garden Grove 53, Bolsa Grande 44--Forward Brent Kaser scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds to pace the Argonauts (1-0, 8-6) to the win at home. Bolsa Grande (0-1, 7-7) was led by Nam Cao’s 12 points. BOLSA GRANDE (44)--Cao 12, Asdahl 1, Valdez 8, Nguyen 6, Swoboda 9, Graves 8.

GARDEN GROVE (53)--Crone 7, Kiefer 4, O’Connor 2, Guibord 11, Duran 10, Woodward 2, Fournier 2, Kaser 15.

Santiago 66, Rancho Alamitos 57--The Vaqueros made more field goals than the Cavaliers, but were outscored at the free throw line, 30-3 in the league-opening loss. Santiago made 30 of its 41 free throw attempts in the upset at home. Ruben Patton and Lee Valasquez each had 14 points to lead Ranco Alamitos.

Rancho Alamitos, the league’s preseason favorite, will try to rebound at home Friday night against La Quinta.
