Division II Baseball : Cal Poly Pomona Wins, 10-0

Kirk Washington scattered five hits to pitch Cal Poly Pomona to a 10-0 victory over Valdosta State of Georgia in the second round of the NCAA Division II college baseball World Series on Sunday night.

The victory was Cal Poly Pomona’s 10th consecutive World Series win. It won the series in four straight games in 1980 and 1983.

In earlier games Sunday, Florida Southern defeated Troy State of Alabama, 10-5, in 12 innings, and New Haven of Connecticut edged Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 10-9, in 11 innings.

Cal Poly Pomona blew the Sunday night contest open in the fourth inning when it scored seven runs. Losing pitcher Mike Jones, 2-1, walked in four consecutive runs in the inning.

Cal Poly scored one more in the fifth and added two in the seventh when Mike Torchia led off with a solo home run.

Rob Busch had two singles in his first two at bats for Valdosta State, which gave him seven consecutive hits in the tourney.

The victory boosted Cal Poly’s record to 38-27-1, while the loss dropped Valdosta State to 47-20 on the year.
