Orange County Area Roundup : Huntington Beach Wins Surf Title

The Huntington Beach High School surf team recently earned won the National Scholastic Assn.’s 1985 championships for the third straight year. No other team has equaled that streak in the competition’s eight-year history.

Huntington Beach accumulated 177 points. San Dieguito took second with 57 points and Cocoa Beach, Fla. was third with 55.

The Huntington Beach girls were led by Nea Post’s third-place finish and Michelle Bray’s fifth-place showing in the finals.

Meanwhile, Huntington Beach swept the boys’ finals, taking the top six spots, the first time any team had dominated to such an extent. Kirk Tice was first, followed by Jason Knudtson, Colby Outlaw, Greg Ryan, Shawn Ingram and Lloyd Tice.

The team also performed well in the kneeboarder’s final, which was won by Dave Kallal. Teammate Chris Detches was second, and Mike Butler was fourth.

Three members of the Huntington Beach team were named to the National Scholastic Surfing Assn.’s national team, which will represent the group in international competition and at the U.S. Surfing Championships. Those selected were Tice, Knudtson and Kallal. Huntington Beach Coach Chuck Allen was named the national team’s coach.
