BRIEFLY : Agoura Assistant Football Coach Dies

Bill Belcher, 43, an assistant football coach at Agoura High, died of an apparent heart attack Tuesday evening at Westlake Community Hospital. He was stricken while tutoring a student in math.

“I don’t think it’s something you overcome,” Agoura Coach Frank Greminger said. “It’s something you just have to accept. We’ll just have to go along with what he would have expected from the team. We’re certainly saddened.

“It didn’t make a difference if it was the classroom or the field. He was just a super person.”

Belcher began teaching at Agoura in 1973. He coached track from 1974 to 1983. An assistant in football since 1974, he served as coach in 1983.

Belcher is survived by his wife, three daughters, a sister and his mother. Funeral arrangement were pending.

Boxer Duarte Continues Comeback Tuesday

The comeback continues.

Frankie Duarte, 30, who lost a non-title, split decision to World Boxing Assn. bantamweight champion Richie Sandoval in his last fight, returns to the ring Tuesday against Ron Cisneros (21-7-1) at the Country Club in Reseda.

Also on the card will be North Hollywood’s Walter Sims (15-2-1), who meets undefeated lightweight Ernie Landeros (9-0-1). Action begins at 8:15 p.m.

Duarte, 35-6 overall, has won three of four bouts since his return to the ring after a three-year retirement spent fighting alcoholism. He lost in a controversial 10-round bout to Sandoval in Sacramento last April.

The fight with Cisneros will be the Duarte’s first step toward earning a possible rematch with Sandoval. The card is sponsored by Al Goossen promotions of Sherman Oaks.

In a special ceremony, ring announcer Jimmy Lennon will be honored.
