East Roundup : Penn State Joins 600-Victory Club, 27-0

D.J. Dozier got well and so did Penn State’s offense.

Dozier ran for 125 yards, scored a touchdown and set up another as third-ranked Penn State overpowered West Virginia, 27-0, Saturday at University Park.

With the victory, the Nittany Lions joined Notre Dame, Alabama, Michigan and Texas as the only Division I-A teams in college football to win 600 or more games.

“I still feel I could have done better today,” Dozier said. “It was not one of my best games. I hope as the season goes on I’ll get better.”

Although he appeared healthy for the first time since he injured a hamstring in the first game of the season, Dozier said: “I guess I’m not as complete as I want to be. I’m not 100% as far as my abilities.”

Quarterback John Shaffer passed to sophomore split end Ray Roundtree for a pair of touchdowns as Penn State (7-0) finally made it look easy after winning six games by a total of 24 points.

Dozier made the big plays in reviving an offense that, despite its record, had been outgained and outpassed. Coach Joe Paterno bristled when asked if felt his team had destroyed its defensive image.

“What image have they had?” he snapped. “You know we’re playing tough teams and beating them. Nobody wants to understand that.

“You need a win like this to boost morale.”

Syracuse 29, Temple 14--Scott Schwedes caught a touchdown pass, returned a punt for another score and threw a scoring pass to lead the Orangemen past the Owls at Syracuse.

Don McAulay kicked three field goals and free safety Markus Paul intercepted three passes to tie a school record as Syracuse (3-3) ended a four-game winning streak by Temple (4-4).

Navy 21, Pitt 7--Napoleon McCallum ran for two short-yardage touchdowns and quarterback Bill Byrne scored another as the Midshipmen surprised the Panthers at Annapolis, Md.

McCallum scored at the end of 85- and 93-yard drives, mostly on the ground, to give Navy (3-4) a 14-7 halftime lead. Pitt (3-4-1) had given up only 1.6 yards per run in seven games this season.

Army 45, Colgate 43--Clarence Jones ran for two touchdowns, and Rob Healy ran for one and passed for another as the Cadets withstood a fourth-quarter barrage by Red Raider quarterback Tom Burgess at West Point, N.Y.

The Cadets (6-1), who led, 31-3, late in the first half, appeared to have the game in hand when Healy scored from the three early in fourth quarter for a 45-24 lead. The Red Raiders (5-2) had scored on seven straight possessions after falling behind, 24-0.

Penn 23, Yale 7--Junior tailback Rich Comizio ran for 202 yards and scored twice, and Ray Saunders kicked three field goals as the Quakers beat the Elis at New Haven, Conn., extending their Ivy League winning streak to 12 games.

Pennsylvania (5-1, 4-0) opened a 20-0 lead before Yale (3-2, 3-1) scored on Ted Macauley’s three-yard run late in the third quarter.

Rutgers 20, Richmond 17--Tailback Reynold Walbrook scored on two short runs as the Scarlet Knights posted their first victory of the season by downing the previously unbeaten Spiders at Piscataway, N.J.

Richmond (7-1), ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division I-AA, had two chances to tie the game in the final 10 seconds. Brendan Toibin missed a 52-yard field goal with three seconds left, but Rutgers (1-5-1) was called for roughing the kicker. After a five-yard penalty, Toibin was just short with a 47-yard effort as time ran out.

Princeton 11, Harvard 6--Tom Urquhart returned a free kick 75 yards for a touchdown after a safety with less than five minutes left and the Tigers upset the Crimson in an Ivy League game at Cambridge, Mass.

Princeton (3-3, 3-1) dominated the second half, but trailed, 6-3, until Harvard’s center snap on a punt from the Crimson 37 sailed over punter Rob Steinberg’s head and went out of the end zone for a safety. Harvard (4-2, 3-1) elected to have Steinberg boot from a placement position at the 20 rather than punt on the free kick, and Urquhart ran it all the way back.

Dartmouth 20, Cornell 17--Craig Saltzgaber’s 27-yard field goal with 2:33 left lifted the Indians to their first win of the season against winless Cornell at Ithaca, N.Y.

Cornell (0-6) jumped out to a 10-0 lead on Tom Aug’s 30-yard field goal and John Tagliaferri’s one-yard run. Dartmouth (1-5) cut the lead to 10-9 as Saltzgaber kicked field goals from 30, 48 and 41 yards, and went ahead on Tim Duax’s 10-yard run and a two-point conversion.

Cincinnati 24, Boston College 17--Danny McCoin passed for two touchdowns and ran in another, and tailback Reggie Taylor ran for 101 yards to lead the Bearcats past the Eagles at Cincinnati.

Cincinnati (5-4) built a 24-3 lead on McCoin’s scores--a two-yard run, a 23-yard pass to Greg Lathan and a 22-yard pass to Roosevelt Mukes.

Bucknell 13, Columbia 10--George Long and Earl Beecham scored fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally the Bisons past the winless Lions, who lost for the 17th straight game and 64th in the last 69.

Columbia (0-6) took a 10-0 lead in the third quarter before Jack Valinotti connected on a 52-yard pass play to Long. Bucknell (3-4) got the winning score on Beecham’s 17-yard run with 4:18 left.
