Whitney Wins Small Schools Championship

Whitney High School of Cerritos, trailing by two points, dominated the inside game in the second half Friday night to run away with a 76-58 win over Bel-Air Prep in the Southern Section Small Schools boys’ championship game at Santa Monica College. Whitney finished the season 22-5, while Bel-Air Prep was 18-9.
Matt Bowley had 14 points and 8 rebounds in the second half to lead Whitney. Bowley finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds.
In the Southern Section 1-A girls’ final, Kim Weich had 18 points and 9 rebounds to lead Oxnard Santa Clara (23-4) over Atascadero, 50-38, at Hancock College. Kathy Torres added 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Saints, who won their 17th straight game.
In the Southern Section Small Schools girls’ final, Yucca Valley won its first title, 38-33, over Maricopa (19-5) at Taft High. Becky Geeson led Yucca Valley (25-2) with 11 points.
