John LaRosa survived scares in the fifth and eighth innings Thursday to pitch Cal State Northridge to a 1-0 victory at home over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The winning run came in the eighth, when Chris Pinsak singled to right field to drive in Todd Mustin from second. Mustin led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jim Vatcher.

Pinsak was thrown out on the play when he tried to stretch a single into a double.

The win boosted CSUN’s record to 14-17 overall and 6-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Cal Poly dropped to 11-13 and 2-9 in league.

LaRosa, who entered the game with an earned run average of 5.76, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the fifth. LaRosa went the distance to improve to 3-1.

The left-hander also escaped in the eighth when Vatcher threw out Cal Poly’s Joe Rumsey, who had tagged up on a deep fly to right field from second base.

John Berringer pitched a complete game for Cal Poly.
