Springnationals Speed Record Set by Garlits

COLUMBUS, Ohio —
Don Garlits recorded the fastest speed in Springnationals history Friday during the second qualifying round for the National Hot Rod Assn. event.
Garlits, of Ocala, Fla., sped through the quarter-mile in 5.52 seconds, reaching a top speed of 265.09 m.p.h., breaking a record set earlier in the day by Gary Ormsby of Roseville, Calif. Ormsby ran in 5.45 seconds and 262.85 m.p.h.
