PEBBLE BEACH — Larry Silveira, Mark Gilmartin and Dana Banke each fired two-under-par 70s Monday to share the first-round lead in the 75th California Amateur Golf Championship.
Silveira, 20, of Oakley, a student at the University of Arizona, was six under par going to the par-3 16th hole at Cypress Point but triple-bogeyed the hole and then bogeyed the 17th. He had seven birdies while playing the course for the first time.
Gilmartin, 23, of Reno, who graduated this month from the University of Nevada, also played the Cypress Point layout in windy conditions and collected four straight birdies from the seventh through 10th holes.
Banke, 24, of Castro Valley, played at Pebble Beach Golf Links and had five birdies and three bogeys, including one on the par-5 18th.
With a 71 at Cypress Point were Bob May, 17, of Yorba Linda and Mitch Voges, 36, of Simi Valley, accounting for the only other sub-par rounds in the field of 200 players. All players will switch courses for today’s second round of qualifying.
After the 36 holes, the field will be cut to the players with the low 64 scores plus ties for Wednesday’s third and final qualifying round.
