Edison High School played the better game for only half of the Marina-Edison tournament final, but fortunately for the Chargers their better half was the second half.

After trailing by as many as 10 in the first half, Edison (13-1) defeated Mission Viejo, 51-45, in front of 300 in the Edison gym, giving the Diablos their first loss of the season.

Mission Viejo (11-1) still held a four-point edge at the start of the third quarter, but the Chargers, whose inside game had been stifled much of the night, suddenly heated up from outside.

“We felt like if we can’t get it inside, let’s just move it around the outside until we get the open 15-footer,” said Dave White, Edison coach.

Denise Ogburn scored hit both ends of a one-and-one and then scored twice from 18-foot range, tying the score, 41-41. Then 6-foot-1 center Kristi Smith hit two 16-footers from the left sideline, and Edison had a 45-44 lead, its first since early in the game.

Ogburn scored four more down the stretch, making 10 of her 14 total points in the fourth quarter, a performance that earned her the tournament’s most valuable player award.

Mission Viejo’s chances for an upset didn’t end until about a minute and a half remained, when Diablo Tricia Stringham was carried off the floor with an injured ankle. Stringham’s play had led her team all night, and after she left the game Mission Viejo did not score again.

Stringham had 13 for the Diablos, and Colleen Amaya aded 10.

Edison’s Smith led all scorers with 21.
