Westlake Plays Percentages to Beat Camarillo, 6-0

Mike Williams thought short passes would open up the offense for his Westlake High boys soccer team in a Marmonte League soccer match Thursday at Camarillo High.

The strategy opened the offense up all right. Full throttle.

The Warriors, ranked sixth in the Southern Section 4-A Division, bombarded the Camarillo goal with 69 shots en route to a 6-0 victory.

“We passed well and that allowed us to take a lot of high percentage shots. Especially in the second half,” Williams said.

The Warriors, led by three goals from striker Eric Wynalda and two from midfielder Wally Androski, scored four goals in the final 20 minutes to expand on a 2-0 halftime lead.

And the score could have been more lopsided were it not for some acrobatic saves by Camarillo goalkeeper Randy Johnson, who resembled a duck in a penny arcade shooting gallery for most of the match.

Westlake (14-0-2, 5-0-1 in league) attacked the Camarillo goal often and early. Senior Cobi Jones set up the Warriors’ first goal when he hit sweeper Brett Potter with a crossing pass off a corner kick with eight minutes left in the first half. Potter blasted the ball past Johnson for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The other first-half goal for the Warriors came when Wynalda hooked a shot around Camarillo defender Bill Langford and a surprised Johnson, who never had a chance.

Camarillo (1-11-1, 0-6), which was outshot, 32-3, in the first half, was still in the match entering the final 45 minutes.

But Androski quickly doused the Scorpions’ slim hopes for an upset by scoring two goals during a six-minute stretch midway through the second half.

Wynalda followed with his second goal on an assist from Hans Linnes and then scored his third goal with an assist from Androski.
