St. Augustine 77, San Diego 54--The Saints (1-3, 9-6) jumped to a 45-19 lead in the first half to beat San Diego (0-4, 0-13). Six St. Augustine players scored in double figures, with Charley Applegate scoring 15 points. Doug Carter added 14 points and 10 rebounds for St. Augustine. Andy Swindall led San Diego with 15 points.

Hoover 60, Crawford 52--Michael Walker scored 21 points--including 9 of 9 free throws--to lead Hoover (2-2, 7-12) at Crawford (2-2, 5-11). Crawford held a two-point lead early in the second half but committed nine turnovers in the third quarter. Dean Wolfe had 15 points to lead Crawford.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

Kearny 65, La Jolla 44--Leading at halftime, 25-22, Kearny outscored La Jolla, 21-10, in the third period at La Jolla. Kearny (4-0, 15-3) overpowered La Jolla (2-2, 11-6) with a series of steals and fast breaks in the third quarter. Randy Robinson and Chris Ortiz each scored 17 points for Kearny. Sean Rodgers had 12 points and 9 rebounds for La Jolla.

Clairemont 53, University of San Diego High School 50--Dave Koonin stole the ball at midcourt and scored to give Clairemont a 51-50 lead with 45 seconds to play. Clairemont (3-1, 13-4) trailed, 40-33, entering the final period. Jason Deal paced Clairemont with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Vic Baer added 11 rebounds and six blocked shots. James Wilson, who was held to two points in the fourth quarter, led University (2-2, 5-10) with 20.

University City 53, Mission Bay 48--Mission Bay (0-4, 5-9) took an 18-5 lead in the first quarter, but was outscored, 25-6. The scene repeated itself in the second half, as Mission Bay dominated the third quarter to take a 41-36 lead, but University City (1-3, 5-7) rallied to in the fourth quarter. Durell Sims paced University City with 15 points. Mission Bay’s Dwain Smith led all scorers with 16.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Morse 54, Patrick Henry 51--Morse (4-0, 14-1) held on to a two-point lead for most of the game at Patrick Henry (2-2, 9-7). Rey Parson led all scorers with 15 points, with teammate Willie Russell adding 12. Oscar McRae scored 14 points to lead Henry.

Point Loma 55, Serra 40--Trailing, 26-21, early in the third period, Point Loma (1-3, 8-11) scored 14 straight points to take a 35-26 lead at Serra. Point Loma, using a full-court press, outscored Serra, 20-10, in the third period. Arlando Hill scored 14 points and Bob Brasher added 13 for Point Loma. Don Knight led Serra (0-4, 2-15) with 15 points.

Madison 65, Mira Mesa 45--Madison, which never trailed, was led by Mike Maine (17 points), Jeffrey Alexander (16 points) and Robby Robinson (14 points) at Madison. Mira Mesa (2-2, 14-4) made 19 of 56 shots and had 15 turnovers. Madison (3-1, 12-5) outrebounded Mira Mesa, 24-18.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Monte Vista 69, Helix 47--Helix (1-9, 4-12) hit only 4 of 10 shots in the first period, allowing host Monte Vista a 30-16 halftime lead. James Gotello scored 16 points and Scott Winne added 14 for Monte Vista (8-2, 11-4).

Mount Miguel 62, Valhalla 60--Delfin Merlan’s steal with 15 seconds to play sparked a Mount Miguel fast break which resulted in Chris Penman’s game-winning layup at Mount Miguel. Anthony Rivera and Mike Flores scored 17 each for Mount Miguel (7-3, 9-7). Rafid Kiti led Valhalla with 17.

El Capitan 63, Grossmont 59--Eric Lozoya scored 8 of his 10 third-period points off four straight steal to led host El Capitan. Lozoya finished 20 points and Bryan Palmer added 18 for El Capitan (4-6, 8-8). Lance Williams paced Grossmont (3-6, 6-10).

GIRLS

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Santana 61, Granite Hills 20-- Santana (10-0, 14-3) outscored Granite Hills, 18-2, in the first quarter. Freshman Rebecca Aase paced Santana with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Leslie Ellis scored 17 points and 13 rebounds. Julie Clancy scored 14 of the team’s 20 points for Granite Hills, which fell to 2-8 in league.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Crawford 69, Hoover 32--Hoover was overwhelmed by Crawford’s full-court press in the first half, as the Colts led, 34-13. Karla Salmi scored 20 points and Carmella Hicks added 17 for Crawford (4-0, 16-1). Lucinda Hoe scored 11 for Hoover.
