BRIEFLY : CSUN Scrimmage Ends Spring Workouts

The Cal State Northridge football team ends its spring workouts with an intrasquad game tonight at 7 at North Campus Stadium.

There will be an all-you-can-eat barbecue before the game. Admission for game and dinner is $5, or $3 with a student identification card. Price for the game only is $3.50.

The CSUN football team is also having a fund-raising golf tournament Monday at the Woodland Hills Country Club. The $100 entry covers greens fees, cart, tee gifts and a prime rib dinner. Shotgun start is at noon.

Burroughs Staffs Will Have New Look

The coaching staffs at Burroughs High will have a new look next year. Ira Sollod, an assistant at Burbank, has been named boys basketball coach, and Brian Hurst, Burroughs athletic director, has been named girls basketball coach.

Sollod is a Burroughs graduate who played basketball at Valley College and Cal State Northridge. He replaces Jesse Mason, who resigned after three seasons.

Hurst will replace Jerry Libman, who is taking a leave of absence after eight years as coach. Libman also coaches softball, and his successor is due to be named soon.

Raiders Play Benefit Basketball at Agoura

Todd Christensen, Vann McElroy and Dokie Williams will be part of a Raiders basketball team that will play a benefit game against students and boosters May 16 at Agoura High at 7:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the game will benefit Athletes for Youth Make a Difference and the Bill Belcher Memorial Weight and Conditioning Facility on the Agoura campus.

Green Honored as Top Track Coach

Artie Green, girls track coach at Thousand Oaks, has been named Southern Section Coach of the Year.

Under Green’s guidance, Thousand Oaks has captured seven straight Marmonte League titles.

NOTABLE

Roman Calczynski of Sepulveda shoots for his second consecutive NASCAR Southwest Tour victory tonight when he heads a field of 40 drivers in the Pepsi-Cola 100 at Shasta Speedway in Anderson, Calif.

Calczynski scored his first Southwest Tour win since last July when he captured Sunday’s 7-Up 100 at Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma. He held off a final-lap charge by Jon Paques of Albuquerque, N.M., to win the race by one second.

The victory was worth $2,887 and boosted Calczynski into second place in the Southwest Tour season point standings behind Mike Chase of Bakersfield.

Lisa Rood, a softball player for North Hollywood High, is one of 20 finalists for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award presented by the CIF and Reebok.

The winners, a girl and a boy, will be announced Monday. Reebok will donate $1,000 to each winner’s school.
