High School Baseball : Granite Hills Can’t Walk Away From 6-5 Loss

After being nearly invincible in Grossmont League play, Granite Hills High School (12-3, 20-5) dropped its second straight game Monday, allowing five unearned runs in the seventh inning in a 6-5 loss at El Capitan (9-6, 14-10).

With his team leading by 5-1, Granite Hills starting pitcher Mike Raskind began the seventh by walking the last three hitters in the El Capitan batting order. Reliever George Bishop then walked the first batter he faced. El Capitan tied the game on two errors and an infield single by Carlos Gutierrez. With two out, Jason Escoto singled home Jerry Aldridge with the winning run.

Granite Hills’ Donnie Carroll led off the fourth with a double to break the San Diego section record of 135 career hits, set last season by Jeff Gay of Santana.

Mount Miguel 8, El Cajon 4--Rich Ayala and Joe Castillo each hit two-run homers for host Mount Miguel (7-8, 14-11). Rusty Pennock hit a two-run homer for El Cajon (3-14, 6-16).

Santana 7, Monte Vista 3--Santana (11-5, 17-8) scored six runs in the seventh inning to defeat Monte Vista (0-15, 4-17).
