San Diego Section Tennis : St. Augustine Wins, 5-2, but Coronado Protests Lineup

St. Augustine’s third-seeded tennis team defeated Coronado, 5-2, Thursday in a 2-A semifinal match at La Jolla High School, but it won’t know until today if it has won for sure.

Coronado Coach Robbin Adair said Thursday night he will file a protest today with the CIF San Diego Section office accusing St. Augustine Coach Timothy Lamm of stacking his lineup.

“I will file a protest about their lineup,” Adair said. “Then it will be up to (San Diego Section Commissioner) Kendall Webb to decide on.”

Adair said St. Augustine played some of its stronger players in lower-ranked matches in order to gain points.

“I have to see all of the information (today) before I can decide on anything,” Webb said.

If Webb rules in Coronado’s favor, it could affect playing of the 2-A championship match, scheduled for today at 2 p.m. La Jolla defeated San Marcos Thursday to earn its spot in the final.

Lamm was unavailable for comment.

In the 3-A semifinals:

Vista 7, Torrey Pines 0--Sammy Stinett beat Mark Ellison, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles to lead the top-seeded Panthers. Vista yielded only one set all day, losing in the No. 3 doubles.

San Dieguito 4, Mt. Carmel 3--Michael Chang won his match at No. 1 singles and his brother Carl combined with Ed Chen for a win at No. 1 doubles to lead San Dieguito past Mt. Carmel.
