City Track Finals Today at Birmingham

An impressive streak may continue and an impressive runner may start another one when the City track and field finals are held today at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys beginning at 4 p.m.

The L.A. Locke girls’ team will be going for its fourth consecutive championship, led this year by Kim McAllister, LeeAnn Tinkshell and two strong relay teams.

Meanwhile, Woodland Hills Taft, with sprinters Quincy Watts and Sean Roberts, will try to become the first boys’ team to successfully defend its title in six years. Watts was practically a one-man show when the Toreadors won the state championship last season, and he has been even more dominating in ’87. He has run three 200-meter races under 21 seconds and is tied for the best 100-meter time in the country at 10.36.

L.A. Dorsey will be the primary challenger for the team competition, led by hurdlers Ron Copeland and Darryl Lockett and shotputter Jason Wyatt. L.A. Washington junior Brian Bridgewater heads the best of the rest against Watts in the 100 and 200.

The top four finishers in each event will advance to the State meet next Friday and Saturday at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.
