The California Suns, an American Youth Soccer Organization team from Woodland Hills, has sent a group of 12- and 13-year-old boys on a tour of Europe as part of an international cultural exchange.

The team will compete in West Germany, Denmark and England. On July 23-26, the team will play in the Vildbjerg Cup Tournament in Denmark. More than 200 teams are entered in the event. On July 27-31, the team will play in the Portsmouth Cup in Portsmouth, England. The team returns Aug. 3.

Members of the team include Tim Abernathy, Jason Aroesty, Matt and Stephen Bobertz, Justin Crane, Justin Ferber, Jeremy Foster, Cary Haber, Jason Hartung, Matt Kahane, Jason Lonas, Brian Malis, Assaf Oved, Robbie Picard, Greg Sutton and Trevor Testwuide. Coaches of the team are Tom Hartung and Bob Sutton.

Rich Corso, coach of the U.S. men’s junior water polo team and a teacher at Harvard High, will take the team on a tour of Europe from July 26 to Aug. 18 that will include training and tournament competition.

The team is composed of players aged 20 and under. The tour begins with training in Berlin, followed by tournaments in Wuppertal, West Germany, and Genoa, Italy. The team also will play an exhibition series in Copenhagen, Denmark, followed by the world junior championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sept. 3-13.

Sean Yanez and Randy Lutz, June graduates of Faith Baptist High, will play in an eight-man all-star football game at Coast Union High in Cambria on Saturday.

Lutz, a running back, and Yanez, a receiver, will play for the South squad. The game includes the state’s top seniors in the eight-man division.

Ian Alsen, a senior at Granada Hills High, finished second in the 18-and-under division of the National Biathlon Championships in Ontario on Sunday.

Alsen completed the race in 1 hour, 21 minutes. The biathlon featured a five-mile run and a 20-mile bicycle ride. Alsen was the City Section runner-up as a junior in cross-country and won the 3,200-meter event in the City track championship.

Tony Chieffo, a senior at Cal State Northridge, advanced to the second round of the 62nd U.S. Public Links Golf Championship at the 6,777-yard, par-72 Glenview Golf Course in Cincinnati last week.

Chieffo, who won his first-round match, was defeated 1-up by John VonLossow of Seattle.

Dave DeLong, who coached track at Burroughs High, has been named track coach at Canyon.

DeLong replaced Bob Heald, who retired from coaching after seven years. DeLong, who led Burroughs to the Foothill League title last season, will teach math.
