Clester’s Field Goal Gives Katella Victory
Bubba Clester kicked a 26-yard field goal with 7:08 left in the game, lifting Katella High School to a 10-7 victory over Costa Mesa in a nonleague football game at Western High Friday.
The winning kick climaxed a 66-yard drive for Katella (3-1) that started on the first play of the final quarter. A 30-yard run by quarterback Jeff Yourstone and a 15-yard run by halfback Jeremy Sherman set up the score.
After a sluggish and scoreless first half, both teams scored on their initial possessions of the second half.
Costa Mesa (1-3) drove 85 yards in 14 plays and took a 7-0 lead on a 5-yard run by Terry Bryant. Every play of the drive, which consumed 6:25 of the third period, was on the ground with the exception of a 15-yard pass from quarterback Rich Schones to tight end Scott Siler.
The Knights answered with a nine-play, 61-yard scoring drive. Fullback Joe Pastorello, who had 39 yards on the possession, got Katella even with a four-yard run.
Katella had to hold off a late Costa Mesa threat to preserve the victory.
A 24-yard pass from Schones to Bryant and two completions to wide receiver Shane Talbert helped bring the ball to the Katella 21 before time ran out.
Pastorello led all rushers with 117 yards in 26 carries, and Bryant had 101 yards in 23 carries for the Mustangs.
Katella’s defense held Costa Mesa to 112 yards on the ground and 64 passing. The Knights also forced four Costa Mesa turnovers, three fumbles and an interception.
