Southern Section Volleyball Playoffs : Fry Leads Esperanza to Sweep of Mission Viejo

Teri Fry had 11 kills and 6 blocks to lead Esperanza High School to a three-game sweep of Mission Viejo Wednesday in a 4-A Southern Section first-round girls’ volleyball match at Esperanza.

Danielle Reaves had eight kills and Sandee Ware seven for Esperanza (14-1), which won, 15-13, 15-9, 15-8.

Mission Viejo ends its season 6-8.

In other 4-A matches:

Marina 3, North Torrance 0--Nikki Blackburn had nine kills and four service aces as Marina (10-5) won at home, 15-7, 15-9, 15-13. Rona Weise had five services aces in the second game for Marina. North Torrance ends at 8-11.

Marina will play Lakewood in the second round Friday.

Lakewood 3, Kennedy 0--Lakewood (12-3) won at home, 15-6, 16-14, 15-0, over Kennedy (12-8).

Huntington Beach 3, Long Beach Jordan 0--Stephanie Pemper had five kills and Kristy Ryan added four as Sunset League champion Huntington Beach (12-2) won at home, 15-0, 15-13, 15-9. Jordan finishes 8-7.

Long Beach Wilson 3, Cypress 0--Wilson, the Moore League champion and the top-seeded team in the 4-A playoffs, advanced to Friday’s second round with a 15-1, 15-3, 15-5 victory at home. Wilson (14-1) plays Torrance in the second round. Cypress ends at 10-6.

In 1-A matches:

Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Connelly 0--Michelle Williams had nine kills and Keri Wade had two service aces to end the match as Capistrano Valley (11-6) won, 15-12, 15-11, 15-9, at Connelly (14-3).

Rosary 3, St. Bernard 0--Stephanie Scofield had 12 kills, 5 blocks and 16 assists for Rosary (17-2), which won at home, 15-13, 15-13, 15-13.
