Aztec Women Finish With a Rout

Jessica Haynes had 24 points and 16 rebounds as San Diego State’s women’s basketball team concluded regular-season play with a 101-58 rout of Pacific in a Pacific Coast Athletic Association game at the Sports Arena Thursday night.

San Diego State next plays Thursday in the first round of the PCAA tournament at Cal State Long Beach. The Aztecs (20-9, 11-7) will be seeded No. 4. Games this weekend will determine who will be San Diego State’s opponent.

The Aztecs, who shot 55.5% from the field, topped the 100-point mark for the second time this year.

For San Diego State, which led 50-24 at the half, Chana Perry (8) and Stephanie Lamar (9) had a 48-26 edge in rebounding. Brooke Meadows had 18 points, Perry 17, Lamar 12 and Alison Smith 12. Perry also had 6 assists and 3 blocked shots.

For Pacific, Julie Szukalski and Debbie Geyser each scored 11. Pacific ended 9-17 and 4-13.

Also Thursday, San Diego State guard Dee Dee Davis, who sustained ligament damage in her knee during Tuesday’s game with Long Beach State, underwent reconstructive surgery. Davis, a 5-8 freshman from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, was replaced in the starting lineup by Sheri Edmonds.

DIVING

Nine San Diego County high school athletes who finished in the top 24 of last year’s CIF championship are scheduled to compete in the Southern California U.S. Championships Saturday and Sunday at UC San Diego’s Canyonview Pool. Diving begins about 9 a.m. each day.

The competition is for novice, junior Olympic and senior divers.

TENNIS

University of Southern California’s Scott Melville, who teamed with Dick Leach to win the title last year, and teammate Eric Amend are seeded No. 1 for the three-day Pacific Coast Men’s Tennis Doubles Championship, which begins today at 9 a.m. at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and runs through Sunday.

Earlier this season, Melville and Amend won the doubles title at the National Collegiate Indoor Championship. Also scheduled to appear are players from UCLA, Pepperdine, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Grossmont, UC San Diego and UC Irvine.

Stanford’s Dave Wheaton and Jeff Tarango are seeded No. 2.

GOLF

Five universities from San Diego County are entered in the 39th Southern California Intercollegiate Golf Championship, which begins today at 6:30 a.m. at Torrey Pines’ South Course and concludes Saturday.

NCAA Division I, II and III schools will be represented in the 22-team field.
