Stones, Howard to Renew High Jump Rivalry Today

Share

Remember when Dwight Stones and Jimmy Howard traded places as the American high jump record-holder in the early 1980s?

That rivalry will be renewed today at the Aztec Track and Field Classic at Balboa Stadium.

And the American record of 7-feet, 8 3/4-inches might fall again. One factor will be the competition between Howard, 28 and the current record-holder, and Stones, 32 and a former American record-holder.

But the surface at Balboa Stadium could help as well. Stones has called it “very springy.”

The meet also will be a homecoming for three athletes. Gail Devers, who set four San Diego Section records while at Sweetwater High, will compete in the 100-meter hurdles for UCLA. Former San Diego State stars Latanya Sheffield and Rene Ross will run in the 400 and 800 meters, respectively.
