Point Loma Nazarene Wins in Track; USD in Tennis Final

Shawndell Reddic and Suzanne Johannson each won two events as Point Loma Nazarene College captured the women’s division of the Golden State Athletic Conference track and field championship meet Saturday at Azusa Pacific.
Point Loma had 95 points, Fresno Pacific 94 and Azusa Pacific 93. Azusa won the men’s segment and Point Loma finished third out of five.
Reddic won the high jump (5-feet 4-inches) and the 100-meter low hurdles (14.87 seconds). Johannson won the triple jump (35-4) and 400-meter run (1:01.06).
TENNIS
Scott Patridge defeated David Gollob, 6-3, 6-2, and Dan Matterra defeated John Kim, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0, to lead the University of San Diego to a 5-1 victory over Yale in the semifinals of the USD Invitational.
USD will meet Nebraska, a 5-1 winner over Dartmouth, in the final today at 2 p.m.
BASEBALL
Rob Brown struck out 11 and Anthony Johnson was 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored to lead San Diego State to a 9-2 victory over Iowa in a nonconference game at Smith Field.
Brown (3-3) went the distance for the victory. Johnson had a three-run homer in the eighth and Harry Henderson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. SDSU (15-9-1) and Iowa (4-2) play again today at 5 p.m.
Matt Laiolo went 3 for 4 and scored three runs, and Mark Trafton was 3 for 7 with 2 RBIs to lead St. Mary’s to a sweep of the University of San Diego in a West Coast Athletic Assn. doubleheader at USD.
Pat Brady led USD (14-14, 1-2) with two doubles and three RBIs. St. Mary’s (15-15, 2-1) won the first game, 6-1, and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the second game, 8-4.
Scott Fredericks had two doubles and four runs batted in as Point Loma Nazarene beat Cal Lutheran, 9-5, for a split in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader in Thousand Oaks.
Cal Lutheran won the opener, 14-5, despite solo home runs by Joe Marcione and Fredericks. Point Loma is 5-18 and 1-6. Cal Lutheran is 11-11 and 4-3.
VOLLEYBALL
Geof Hart had 16 kills to lead Pepperdine to a 15-10, 15-11, 9-15, 15-9 victory over San Diego State in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. game at Malibu.
Hugh Foster led 11th-ranked SDSU (12-12, 2-8) with 14 kills. Pepperdine, ranked sixth, is 9-9, 5-5.
