Boys’ Roundup : Foothill of Bakersfield Wins Division II Title, 66-61

Archie Wright scored a game-high 22 points, including 4 free throws in the final 30 seconds, and Reggie Phillips added 21 to lead Foothill High School of Bakersfield to the State Division II boys’ championship with a 66-61 victory over Menlo-Atherton Saturday at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

The Trojans (27-4) went ahead for good when Arthur Charles converted an offensive rebound into a 62-60 lead with 1:13 to play.

Wright then hit two free throws to give Foothill a four-point cushion.

Menlo-Atherton (28-6) got 16 points from Cedric Reed and 14 points and 10 rebounds from Atiba Williams.

Daly City Jefferson 76, San Diego Lincoln 71--Bryan Thomasson scored 32 points and Teeter Marshall added 24 as the Indians came from 16 points down in the third quarter to win the Division III boys’ title at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

Carl Gaines scored 25 points for Lincoln (26-3), which was outscored, 45-27, in the second half. Jefferson finishes 32-1.

Fresno Washington Union 76, San Rafael Terra Linda 55--Washington Union extended its winning streak to 28 games when the Panthers beat the Trojans to win the Division IV boys’ basketball championship at College of the Canyons in Valencia.

The Panthers put on a full-court press in the second half, turning an eight-point halftime lead into a second-half rout. They maintained a 20-point lead for most of the fourth quarter.

The Panthers (31-2) have won seven straight Central Sequoia League titles in the Central Section. The Trojans (24-9) of the Marin County Athletic League are the Northern Regional champions from the North Coast Section.

Ripon Christian 67, Calipatria 63--From tipoff, it was a battle of the guards--Calipatria’s Robert bRomero, who scored 34 points, and Ripon’s Mike VanderMolen, who scored 23, including five three-pointers.

And, in the end, it was a three-pointer by VanderMolen that sent the Knights into double overtime on their way to the Division V boys’ championship at College of the Canyons.

With seven seconds left in regulation and Ripon trailing by three points, Romero fouled out. VanderMolen missed the first free throw, but faked his second, recovering a hard shot off the board, then stepped back and sank a three-pointer to tie the score at 59-59. The score was 61-61 at the end of the first overtime period but, without Romero, the Hornets (26-2) couldn’t hang on to beat the Knights (28-8).
