Area Roundup : Joyce, Tower to Lead County Stars in Game Against Los Angeles Team

Bobby Joyce of Santa Ana High School and Chris Tower of Westminster, both Times’ All-Orange County County basketball players, will lead the Orange County team against the Los Angeles team in a Slam ‘n’ Jam game at Cal State Los Angeles Saturday at 8 p.m.

Joyce averaged 24.2 points and 15.5 rebounds for Santa Ana, which won the Century League title. Tower averaged 24.2 points and 10.8 rebounds.

Kevin Rembert, who averaged 15.5 points and 9 rebounds for Mater Dei, also is on the Orange County team. Mike Hopkins (Mater Dei), Geoff Propst (Corona del Mar), Bret Johnson (El Toro) Gylan Dottin (Saddleback) and Gary Hunter (Buena Park) also are members of the Orange County team.

Several local high school basketball stars will compete in the Orange County slam dunk contest at Pacifica High School Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Bobby Joyce of Santa Ana, Kevin Rembert and Mike Hopkins of Mater Dei, Leo Parker of Tustin, Gylan Dottin of Saddleback, Khari Johnson of El Toro and Scott Campbell of La Quinta are among those who are expected to compete.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students.

Arie Selinger and Doug Beal, coaches of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball teams, will conduct a coaching clinic Saturday and Sunday at Fountain Valley High School and at the Red Lion Inn in Costa Mesa.

Included in the clinic will be an exhibition match Saturday at 7 p.m. at Fountain Valley High between Special Olympians from Orange County and San Gabriel.

Proceeds will go to the Special Olympics and the Flo Hyman Memorial Fund, which is administered by the Women’s Sports Foundation and the U.S. Volleyball Assn.

The clinic, which is sponsored by ABBA Sports and the Pacific Coast Juniors, will include on-court sessions at Fountain Valley High School and lectures at the Red Lion Inn.

Selinger, who coached the U.S. women’s team to a silver medal in 1984, is now coaching Holland’s national men’s team. Beal coached the U.S. men’s team to a gold medal in 1984.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. March 26 at the Red Lion Inn.

Mike Lambresi of Carlsbad and Jim Hogan of Capistrano Beach, two of the nation’s top surfers, will be featured in the $20,000 Free Style Pro-Am on Saturday, April 2, at Wild Rivers in Laguna Hills.

The event also includes a bodyboarding competition.

It will be the third inland surfing contest in the United States. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m.
