THE PREPS : Softball : Carpenter Pitches One-Hitter as Edison Beats Marina, 5-0

Terry Carpenter pitched a one-hitter as Edison High School defeated Marina, 5-0, Friday in the championship round of the Canyon softball tournament at Peralta Park in Anaheim.

Carpenter (7-1) struck out 14.

Edison (8-2) scored two runs in the third inning and three runs in the sixth inning.

Edison took advantage of four walks and Jyll Pattinson’s RBI fielder’s choice in the third. Kim Jones had an RBI single, and Carpenter had a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

In other Canyon tournament championship second-round games:

Fountain Valley 1, St. Joseph 0--Rae Rice (5-1) threw a three-hitter for Fountain Valley (7-2), which scored an unearned run in the fourth. Lisa Fernandez (5-1) pitched a one-hitter for St. Joseph (8-2).

In the consolation quarterfinals:

Westminster 3, La Habra 1--Steph Viola (4-3) threw a two-hitter, striking out eight, for Westminster at Peralta Park. Shelly Fuller had two hits for Westminster (4-3). La Habra is 6-7.

Newbury Park 6, Buena Park 0--Lea Lopez threw a one-hitter, striking out four, for Newbury Park (5-3-1). Buena Park is 5-3.

In Canyon tournament consolation games:

Valencia 1, Magnolia 0 (8 innings)--Michele Granger (7-1) pitched a no-hitter and had 18 strikeouts for Valencia (8-1). Magnolia’s only baserunner reached base in the eight inning on an error. Danette Davis singled, moved to second on a sacrifice, went to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a two-out passed ball for Valencia in the eighth inning.

Garden Grove 3, Western 2--Western rallied for two runs in the seventh inning, but Stephanie Smith struck out Cindy Brown with the bases loaded for the final out. Smith (4-3) had six strikeouts in the complete-game victory. Smith had a triple and later scored for Garden Grove, which sent eight batters to the plate during a three-run third inning.

Sunny Hills 8, Fullerton 0 (5 innings)--Terri Van Sickle and Tammy Hart hit back-to-back solo home runs for Sunny Hills in a game called after five innings on a mercy rule. Amy Huett pitched a three-hitter for Sunny Hills.
