High School Roundup : Top Singles Players, Doubles Teams Reach Semifinals

The top two seeded singles players and top three seeded doubles teams advanced to the semifinals of the San Diego Section boys’ tennis championships in second-round and quarterfinal play Wednesday at La Jolla and Bishop’s high schools.

Top-seeded Tom Phanco of Bishop’s and second-seeded Andy Potter of San Pasqual advanced to today’s 2 p.m. semifinals at Bishop’s. Phanco will play No. 7 Mike Askvig of Valhalla in one semifinal, and Potter will play No. 9 Mark Ellison of Torrey Pines in the other.

Potter defeated fifth-seeded Peter Moraweicke of Clairemont, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Phanco beat Marco Zuniga of St. Augustine, 6-3, 6-2. No. 8 seeded David Smith of La Jolla Country Day was eliminated, 7-5, 6-4, in the second round by Ellison.

In the doubles, the top-seeded team of Jeff and Jerry Miyamoto of Patrick Henry advanced to a semifinal with fifth-seeded Dennis Kim and Dan McKenzie of La Jolla at 2 p.m. at Bishop’s. The Miyamotos defeated Gene Carswell and James Kim of Mt. Carmel, 6-4, 6-3, in a quarterfinal. Kim-McKenzie defeated fourth-seeded Angel Galvadon and Jeff Priske of St. Augustine, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The second-seeded team of Chris Swortwood and Chris Zarro of Torrey Pines has lost just three games in four matches and will meet No. 3 Mauricio and Adria Cordova of Bonita Vista.

All-Star Baseball--The San Diego County All-Star high school baseball game will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.

The game will be played between teams of players from 3-A and 2-A schools. In previous years, all-stars from city school teams played those from county schools.

Dave Heid of Fallbrook will coach 3-A and Bill Kutzner of Escondido will coach 2-A. The players, who have not been announced yet, were selected by the coaches.

Admission for the nine-inning game will be $2 for adults, $1 for students.
