Area Roundup : Softball Tournament Begins Today at Cypress
Some of the nation’s top women softball players will compete in this weekend’s Cypress softball tournament at Arnold Cypress Park.
The tournament will feature such top traveling teams as the California Raiders, the six-time senior national champions; Gordon’s Panthers, the four-time 15-and-under national champions, and the Orange County Majestics, the women’s open champions.
Among the players participating will be pitchers Michele Granger, Lisa Fernandez, Dena Mullens and Kari Kropke, all Southern Section high school standouts.
The tournament begins today and continues through Sunday evening. Admission is free.
The Body Glove Surf Bout, the eighth stop on the 1988 pro surfing and body boarding tour, will be June 16-19 at Salt Creek County Beach in Laguna Niguel.
The tournament will feature four-man trial heats, replacing the traditional six-man heats. The event is sponsored by the Professional Surfing Assn. of America.
Ram defensive end Gary Jeter and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown will be among the celebrities at a benefit Saturday for the Special Olympics. Celebrities will appear at Gold’s Gym in Fontana at 10 a.m., Gold’s Gym in Corona at 11:30 and River Run Apartments in Corona at 2. For more information, call 371-1055.
