SportsScope : Banning Alumni Group to Hold Fund-Raiser

Banning High School’s Red and Black Alumni Club will play the Pilots’ varsity in a touch football game at 6 p.m. June 17 at Banning. The newly formed club, which hopes to raise money to provide college scholarships for Banning football players, is charging a $3 admission fee that will include refreshments.

Former Banning players expected to participate include quarterbacks Joey Montijo and Eddie Kapu, Harbor College Coach Chris Ferragamo and the Pilots’ new coach, Joe Dominguez.

Torrance Memorial Hospital Medical Center’s second annual golf tournament will be held Monday at Rolling Hills Country Club, 27000 Palos Verdes Drive East in Rolling Hills Estates. There is a $200 entry fee, which covers green fees, locker facilities, lunch and an awards dinner plus prizes. Proceeds will go to the medical center’s Health Care Foundation. The annual Dad’s Day Dash 10-K will be held June 19 in Hermosa Beach. The race, which benefits the Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles, will begin at 8 a.m. at Hermosa and Pier avenues. Preregistration is $12 before Tuesday. Race day registration will be $14. The entry fee includes a racing tank top, and awards will be given in male and female age groups. Clippers star Michael Cage will act as race co-host.

The Gardena Valley YMCA will hold its second annual Gardena Valley Golf Championship on June 24 at Alondra Park. The first tee-off in the 18-hole tournament will be at 11 a.m. Entry fee of $30 includes green fees and prizes. Proceeds will benefit the YMCA’s youth programs. For registration, call 327-5356. Sign-ups for American Youth Soccer Organization Region 6 will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Eastview Little League, Capitol Drive at Gaffey Street in San Pedro. The region includes San Pedro, Harbor City, Lomita and portions of Wilmington and Carson and is open to youths age 5 to 18.

Registration is $50 for one child, $90 for two or $120 for three or more. Youths must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have proof of age.

Al Ycoy of San Pedro scored a hole in one at Harbor Park recently. According to the starter, Ycoy knocked a 9-iron into the 135-yard eighth hole.
