Coppertone Wins in Breeders Championship
Coppertone took advantage of favorite Doodlin’s break on the final turn Friday night to win the California Breeders Championship for 3-year fillies and earn the biggest check of her career.
Sitting second behind Doodlin from the start, Steve Desomer moved Coppertone into the lead when Doodlin broke midway on the far turn. Coppertone then paced home strongly to preserve the victory by a half length over Cuddle Up.
Doodlin finished a head back of Cuddle Up.
Coppertone more than doubled her lifetime earnings with Friday’s victory. She earned $22,207 and had previously earned $15,362 in 15 starts--representing 3 victories, 4 seconds and 1 show.
Coppertone, which won in a time of 2:01.0, went off at odds of 8-1 and paid $19.00 to win, $8.20 to place and $2.40 to show. Cuddle Up paid $10.60 and $2.40. Doodlin paid $2.10 to show. The $2 exacta from Coppertone to Cuddle Up paid $82.00.
