SOUTHERN SECTION 5-AA BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Huntington Beach Falls to 4th-Seeded Lakewood

Lakewood High School opened a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter and was never headed en route to an 87-69 victory over visiting Huntington Beach in the second round of the Southern Section 5-AA basketball playoffs Friday night.

Huntington Beach (13-12) trailed, 38-25, at halftime against the taller and quicker Lancers (22-6), who are seeded fourth. The Oilers closed within 46-37 with 1:50 left in the third quarter, but could get no closer.

Lakewood’s Brian Camper and his cousin, Victor Camper, led all scorers with 22 points and 19 points, respectively.

For Huntington Beach, senior point guard Andy Thompson had 16 points and Joey Kijewski had 17 points off the bench, 12 in the fourth quarter.

The game was marred by a fight midway through the fourth quarter, which resulted in the ejection of Brian Camper.
