Prep Notes : Summer Basketball Tournament Begins Today at Mater Dei, Capistrano Valley

Santa Clara High School of Oxnard, the defending state Division III champion, is the top-seeded team in the Mater Dei-Capistrano Valley summer basketball tournament scheduled to begin today at two locations.

The 30-team tournament will be in the Capistrano Valley and Mater Dei gymnasiums. The four-day tournament will conclude Sunday with the championship game at 7:30 p.m. at Capistrano Valley.

Among the top players expected to compete are all-state forward Shon Tarver (Santa Clara), forward Ed O’Bannon (Artesia), center Cherokee Parks (Marina), forward Scott McCorkle and guard Chris Kostoff (Capistrano Valley), forwards Elton Moore and Jimmy Galbert (Saddleback), guard Andy Karich (Mater Dei), guard Rob Johnson (El Toro), center Rob Conlisk (Los Alamitos) and forward Mark Wilkinson (Foothill).

Other seeded teams are Capistrano Valley, Marina, Ocean View and Mater Dei. Capistrano Valley is the defending champion. The first-round pairings:

At Mater Dei: 10 a.m.--Newport Harbor vs. Fullerton; 11:30--Los Alamitos vs. El Toro; 1 p.m.--Trabuco Hills vs. Servite; 2:30--Mater Dei vs. Bosco Tech; 4--Palisades vs. Santa Clara; 5:30--Saddleback vs. Camarillo; 7--Christ the King (N.Y.) vs. Mater Dei JV; 8:30--St. Paul vs. Los Amigos.

At Capistrano Valley: 10 a.m.--Dominguez vs. Tustin; 11:30--Fountain Valley vs. Laguna Hills; 1 p.m.--Artesia vs. University; 2:30--Dana Hills vs. Ocean View; 4--Foothill vs. San Clemente; 5:30--Marina vs. Lakewood; 7--Capistrano Valley vs. Pacifica.

Joe Reid, who led Laguna Hills High School’s basketball teams to the only two Southern Section playoff appearances in school history, resigned Wednesday.

Reid, 45, was elevated from varsity assistant to head coach with seven games remaining in the 1987-88 season when Dave King abruptly resigned. Reid led the Hawks into the 2-A division playoffs.

In 1988-89, Laguna Hills was 16-10--the best mark in school history--and qualified for the 3-A division playoffs, where it won its first postseason game.

Reid was an assistant under Larry Sunderman at Estancia High and became the school’s coach when Sunderman resigned to accept a coaching job at Orange Coast College.

“I’ve coached for 22 straight years, and it’s time to step back and see what life is like after basketball,” Reid said. “I’ve got seven kids and my oldest will begin high school in two years, so I’d like to spend some more time with them.”

Reid said he will continue coaching the team in summer league competition until a successor is named. He teaches health and drivers’ education at Mission Viejo High.

Laguna Hills will have three starters and six lettermen returning next season. Applications for the job, which includes a teaching position, are being accepted through June 30.
