NOTEBOOK : Laurels Piling Up for Pepperdine’s Star Center Fielder Hirtensteiner

Rick Hirtensteiner, star center fielder for Pepperdine’s West Coast Athletic Conference champions, has been crowned with so many laurels this year that it’s a good thing he is not allergic to that form of vegetation.

The latest in a long list of honors received by Hirtensteiner, who recently graduated in business administration with a 3.85 grade-point average (on a 4-point scale), came when he was named the WCAC’s outstanding senior male student-athlete.

Wayne Wright, Pepperdine athletic director, said, “I cannot think of a young man at this institution who has better exemplified the term ‘student-athlete.’ Rick has proven that high levels of success can be achieved simultaneously both in the classroom and on the playing field.”

Among other highs achieved by Hirtensteiner this season: Baseball America first-team All-American, American Baseball Coaches Assn. second-team All-American, Academic All-American, WCAC Player of the Year. He was a first-team all-conference selection for three straight years.

Drafted recently by the California Angels, he was assigned to the Angels’ minor league club in Bend, Ore.

UCLA basketball Coach Jim Harrick and several of his players will be following the bouncing basketball in Europe and the United States this summer.

Harrick is scheduled to conduct clinics in Yugoslavia, and he will also coach a Pacific-10 Conference all-star team that will tour Hungary in August. Bruin senior center Kevin Walker will play for the Pac-10 all-stars.

Senior forward Trevor Wilson is among 28 players invited to tryouts for the U.S. team that will play in the World University Games. Tryouts are at Purdue University in August. The games will be held in Duisburg, West Germany.

Sophomores Don MacLean, a forward, and Darrick Martin, a guard, and incoming freshman Mitchell Butler, will play at the U.S. Sports Festival in July in Oklahoma City.

Sophomore guard Gerald Madkins will play for a team representing Amateur Sports Development-USA that will tour Morocco and France.

The Westside Fencing Center in Culver City and the Culver City Babe Ruth League are among recipients of grants from the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles.

The fencing center received $45,000 to expand its instructional program in the sport for high school teachers. The youth baseball league received $5,000.

Janiece Stimpfig and Frances Patterson, who played for Coach D’ney Goodfellow-Granger’s women’s volleyball team last season and led the Corsairs to the quarterfinals of the state tournament, have transferred to four-year schools. Stimpfig, a setter and outside hitter, will attend Loyola Marymount, and Patterson, an outside hitter, is headed for San Francisco State.

A host of athletes from the Westside will represent the United States in the 13th World Maccabiah Games, July 3-13 in Israel.

Beverly Hills residents and their sports are David Shoehalter, track and field; Dana Foonberg, Nanette Furlong, James Rothman and Ed Massey, volleyball; Joseph Siegman and Hymie Shuster, lawn bowling; Maurie Ornest, softball, and Eyal Adini, table tennis.

Robin Stone of the Santa Monica Gymnastics Center will represent the United States at the International Gymnastics School and Friendship competitions, which will begin Friday and end July 7 in Moscow and Leningrad. Principal organizer for the games is the Assn. for International Cultural Exchange Programs.

Senior infielder Melissa Punch of Culver City High School was named to the All-CIF Southern Section 3-A softball team, and Notre Dame Academy junior pitcher Gloria Fernandez was selected to the 1-A team.

Westside prep volleyball players chosen for All-CIF boys teams included Santa Monica High senior Mike Sealy, 4-A first team; Brentwood junior Hamilton von Watts, 3-A second team, and Brentwood sophomore Brian Garrett, 3-A third team.

St. Bernard seniors Jay Armant and Keith Cochran made the 2-A first team, and St. Bernard junior Jason Olive, the second team.

Senior outfielders Michael Moore of Beverly Hills High School and Todd Steverson of Culver City High, and Culver City senior infielder Tim Mitchell were named to the All-CIF 5-A division baseball first team. Culver City junior outfielder Mauricio Estivel made the second team.

Nine Westside high school seniors were named to the All-Los Angeles City 4-A boys volleyball teams, and two Fairfax High seniors made 3-A teams.

All-4-A selections include Paul Asher and Dave Martin (Palisades) and Jim Blackman (Westchester), first team; Marco Franco (Palisades) and Colin Gerard (University), second team, and Clayton Meixel (Westchester), John Sager (University) and Domrell Morris and Curtis Stoklos (Palisades), third team.

The Fairfax All-3-A players are Rick Ayala, first team, and Derek Walker, second team.

More than $100,000 was raised for the John Tracy Clinic for hearing-impaired preschool children at the 43rd annual Tennis and Crumpet celebrity doubles exhibition at Playboy Mansion West, according to the clinic’s sponsoring women’s auxiliary.

In mixed doubles, Robert and Audrey Loggia split two sets with Cathy Lee Crosby and Willie Gault. Winners in men’s doubles were John Fosythe and Michael Carter, who took a set from Fred Willard and lan Rachins.

The clinic, a nonprofit educational facility on West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles, was founded by Mrs. Spencer Tracy in 1942.
